Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil

In Bury Our Bones in the Midnight Soil, V. E. Schwab crafts a sweeping, centuries-spanning story about three women whose lives are bound together by blood, hunger, and fate. Beginning in 16th-century Spain, a young girl dreams of freedom beyond the limits placed on her—only to make a choice that grants her immortality and costs her everything else. What follows is a life shaped by secrecy, survival, and an unrelenting thirst that turns desire into danger.

Generations later, in Victorian London, another woman finds herself trapped by society’s expectations and suffocating rules. When she encounters a mysterious figure who offers her power instead of obedience, she steps into a world where love and violence blur together. Immortality becomes both escape and curse, binding her to a legacy she doesn’t yet understand.

In present-day Boston, a college student’s chance encounter sets off a chain of events that exposes the truth behind the legends. As past and present collide, the three women’s stories intertwine in a dark exploration of identity, obsession, and the cost of eternal life. Lush, haunting, and razor-sharp, this is a tale about the hunger to be free—and the terrifying price of getting exactly what you wished for.
